about me

Welcome to the DECOMPRESSION STOP blog!

I’m an Engineering executive with extensive customer-facing international experience in broadcast, satellite and IP networks, system engineering, and management of complex projects. Based in Ottawa, Canada, I provide leadership to a global team of Sales Engineers and have travelled to dozens of countries and almost all continents, as part of providing advanced technology to some really fascinating challenges.

Professional Engineer, member IEEE and proud holder of US Patents 8,707,370 and 8,903,398. For more information on my professional experience and accomplishments see LinkedIn. I’m also a hiker, biker, diver, audiophile, coffee aficionado, loving husband and very proud father.

I specialize in explaining deeply technical concepts to non-engineers—from senior executives to friends and family. I created “Decompression Stop” to share stories related to my experience designing technology solutions and leading teams. I’d love to hear from you…if there are any questions you have or you want to get in touch, feel free to email:

Decompression Stop: is a technical diving term—a specific depth level at which one pauses during ascent from a deep dive in order to surface safely. I like this as a metaphor for what we do in Sales Engineering when working with customers—diving into technology and knowing how to safely emerge.

  1. I’m back to troubleshoot my first gen X1, which continues to brew inconsistently. I’ve isolated the problem to something that happens to the pressure between between brewing, frothing, and then brewing again. It won’t brew again. If I remove the shower screen, brew head, spring and stopper, and put them back in, it works again. I’m also newly exxperiencing a lot of dripping. I’ve descaled, replaced the pump, valve, and expansion spring and silicon stopper. I think the issue may be the group seal, so I ordered that and will replace it. Thoughts?

    • I gave up using steam mode and frothing the milk and for expediency I microwave my milk (shh, don’t tell the purists). I’m at a loss on what to suggest. These machines are not rated well and I think you’re seeing some of the reasons why.

    • Sorry for the delay in responding. I have 4 baby grandchildren now and a full time career so I’m quite busy. Have you had any luck? These machines are temperamental. Maybe take apart the shower screen and group head and clean/descale the valve seat where the spring loaded silicone stopper seal sits.
